ECONOMY IN SPAIN
Salary and Military Cuts REPUBLICAN & RELIGION Madrid, April 26. Mindful that the Dictator, the Marquis de Estella (General Primo de Rivera), increased the Ministerial salaries to 19,000 pesetas, the Ministers have virtually refused the Increase until the Cortes- should decide whether it is warranted. The Minister of War is. reducing the number of army officers, and has ordered that there shall be no further admissions to the Military Academy in 1931. The Papal Nuncio visited the Minister of Justice and assured him that the Church desired to collaborate with the Government in maintaining order. He hoped that the Republic would respect the rights of religion. The only petty side to the magnificent victory of the Republic is the almost maniacal destruction of Royalist emblems. Shops have hastily obliterated coats of arms, formerly proudly displayed in hotels and businesses. The Minister of Finance has forbidden members of the Royal Family and relatives to the fourth degree selling property until Crown property has been taken over by the Republic, which is offering the palaces and gardens to municipalities. Cabinet has reduced the voting age of men from 25 to 23, bringing into the ranks of the Republicans _ numbers of students and young enthusiasts.
