SENIOR GAME WANTED

Hutt Council’s Request IN RUGBY TEAM’S ABSENCE In a recommendation of the parks committee to the Lower Hutt Borough Council last night that the Rugby Union be awarded two grounds on the Recreation Ground, tho Hockey Association two grounds, and Association Football one ground, a proviso was added that the grounds for Rugby were subject to a senior match beiug played on the Hutt Recreation Ground every season. The reason actuating the committee ■to make this recommendation was that last season, when a considerable amount of Hutt Interest attached to the games, on occasions when the Hutt team was playing away from Hutt n,o senior match was provided for spectators. It was “to overcome this undesirable state of affairs" that the committee made the recommendation. Councillor Campbell objected to the proviso as a dangerous clause. The ground was leased to ■ the Wellington Rugby Union, it paid the rental, and it was not for the council to dictate to the union what games should be played, on it. “The answer to that,” said' Councillor J. Mitchell,, chairman of the- committee, “is that the council Jias recently built a grandstand on the ground. I think the council has a perfect right to make that stipulation. The ratepayers are ail asking for first-class matches, and they are entitled to them.” It was stated by the. mayor that from Information he had obtained,'it was practically certain that there would be a senior match played on the Hutt Recreation round every Saturday. If not, a senior A match, then a senior B match. The mayor undertook to sec the chairman of the Wellington Rugby. Union concerning matches to be put on the Hutt Recreation Ground.
