THE RACING WORLD

Some Reflections on Trenthain Meeting

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “The Watcher.”)

First acceptances for the C.J.C. Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps arc due on Friday at 8 p.m. The Walmate meeting will be held today, and the Bay of Plenty meeting on , Saturday. The Manawatu meeting will open on Saturday and conclude on Monday. , It was said that Niglitmarch did not start In the Challenge Stakes on Saturday because he was sore. Not so sore as Karapobl’s backers were on Tuesday. Leading lightweight jockeys have recently been-suspended for careless riding. Is there to be no penalty for incompetent riding which In some cases Is competence skilfully concealed: Why did a prominent rider of a good horse in one of the races at Trentiham on Tuesday display more desire to hold another and fractious competitor • into the barrier than to see that his own mount got off well. , It Is no secret that the running ot a prominent horse on the first day at Wellington was viewed, by the stipendiaries as very unsatisfactory. No action was taken, but the rider was severely crossexamined. Mr. W. Price's starting at the Wellington meeting reached a very high standard. Several of his dispatches were perfect. If Ammon Ita was worth SaOOgns., wiiat would it cost to buy Bronze Eagle, Lady Pam’s bard race in the St. Leger got to the bottom of her for the time being, and she was never In the picture in the Trantham Gold Cup. Her rider is, under the circumstances, to bo commended for not knocking her about. Lady Pam will not fulfil her Awapunl engagements. The Ulimaroa’s “Ocean News” shows that at Kosohill on Saturday the Club Handicap was won by the ex-Aucklander, Gemlight, with Chide second. At Caulfield the Welter Handicap was won by another Aucklander, Hyde Park, who started at a good price. Mr. W. 11. Gafsford's two-year-old, Esteem, by Pombal from Eulogy, did not race up to expectations in the North Island Challenge Stakes on Saturday. He may be sent to Riccarton.. for the Champagne Stakes at Easter. The brood mare Morzonia was found drowned on Mr. C. Merrylees's property near Dannevirke recently. Morzonia was the dam of Mahora and Golden Shadow, and at the time of her death was in foal to Tractor. Korokio did not come to the Wellington meeting, but she is to race at Awapunl. Just an Idea and Korokio may make a trip to Riccarton at Easter. Nightmarch made R. Reed’s fourth winning ride in the Trenthain Gold Cup. The others were Rapine twice and Star Stranger the first time he won. Simba’s form at the Wellington meeting was solid and consistent. There does not j appear any doubt now that he has come > good ami solid. He was unlucky on Tuesday, or he would have won a double, and his .form suggests that he will run out a distance event any time he is tried. Bronze Eagle’s Class. The two-year-olds at the Wellington meeting were unable to show just how good Is Bronze .Eagle. lie made hacks of them each day, yet they ineluded good winners and well-perforxned youngsters. There is not any doubt that Bronze Eagle is something right out of the ordinary, probably the best two-year-old since the days of Rational, Mermin, The Hawk, Tamatele, and others of that great vintage year. Good Family. The Martian mare Equipment has been one of the gems of the Stonyburst Stud. Included among her foals are Rivalry by Antagonist, Centrepiece by The Acc, Full Feather by Autumnus, Ball Dress by Winning Hit, and now the two-year-old colt Cricket Bat, brother to Ball Dress Is showing form. His second to Bronze Eagle was gained by an excellent display of stamina, and had he not had his sea-

son interrupted by the fall at Trentham in January, he may even have been capable of giving the brilliant winner a lot of trouble. Cricket Bat, if all goes well with him, should be a good Derby prospect. Promising Youngsters. Cylinder’s brother, Cyprus, had his first race when ho ran iu the Pacific Handicap on Tuesday. He was always well back, and never prominent in the running. He is a good-looking gelding, with a bold style of galloping, and no doubt will be heard from as a three-year-old. Eaglet’s sister, Columba, showed plenty of speed in the Pacific Handicap, being up In the front for the Brat half, and eventually finishing fourth. Columba should not be long in winning another race. 14 me rick’s Form, One of the features of the sprint events at Trentham was the form of Limerick. Right away back in the early stages he travelled very fast over the last two furlongs, and each day finished fifth, right up with the fourth horse. If Limerick trains on he will make matters interesting for his opponents over a longer journey. His connections received every encouragement to take him on to the Manawatu meeting. Cadland is Good. Cadland was easily the best sprinter at the Wellington meeting, and his improved form this autumn Is outstanding. As he has won an open mile race, and has proved exceedingly solid at the finish of all his races, he should be capable of winning a big distance liandieap. Not So Strong. > The South Islanders did not have their usual good innings at the Wellington meeting this time. On the first day they did not get a horse Into the money. They did better on Tuesday. Shatter, Nightmarch, True Shaft and Kozau won races, while place money went to Rin Tin Tin, Cricket Bat and Winsome Hind. Why Not? Rather a good suggestion was made at Trentham ou Tuesday as the horses were going down to the post for the Trentham Gold Cup. The start of this race, which is the only two-mlle race run at Trentham, is at the six furlong post, away out of sight of the racegoers without glasses. Is there any reason why the Trentham Gold Cup could not be started at the old six furlong mark on the course proper, so that the contestants could be well in view all through the race? There is now no starting barrier at the old six furlongs, but the mark is on the rails, and the race could be started by flag just as the Canterbury Jockey Club has always started Its long distance welght-for-agc race, the Canterbury Cup. Karapoti Goes Home. Karapoti has gone home, and will not ’ ruu at Awapunl. His absence from the Awapunl Gold Cup Is to be regretted, but A. Cook considers he has had enough for the time being. As a matter of fact, Cook was not jit all anxious to run Karapoti in the Trentham Gold Cup, as he did not consider he had had the racing or the work for a hard two-mile race. The Wanganui Jackson Stakes, the North Island Challenge Stakes, and four gallops, was all that he had had since the Great Northern Derby. Will Race Too. Mr. L. W. Storry, who has established a stud at Riccarton, contemplates doing a little racing, in addition to his breeding activities. With that object he has just placed a couple of yearling fillies in C. Emerson’s stable. One of them is by Weathervane from the Imported mare, Grey Linnet, the dam of Songbird. The other is by Robespierre from Lady Minerva, and thus a half-sister to Minerval. This is the Lady Zetland family, through Lady Lillian. It has produced some good performers, one of them, Royal Star, being a New Zealand Cup winner. Cutting Expenses. The Dunedin Jockey Club, considering its financial position, has carried the following resolutions: —(1) That the practice of providing lunches, etc., for stewards, guests, owners, trainers and jockeys, be discontinued; (2) that the sale of racebooks be controlled direct by the secretary ; (3) that no more than one lady’s ticket be issued with each complimentary owner’s and trainer’s ticket. A Good Win. With Vellmond, Carry On, and Killarney to represent him, Geo. Price, at Caulfield and Flemington, tenured the following wins and plaelngs _ with the horses under his charge:—Vellmond, first, Woodcliff Handicap, £-100; Vellmond, first, V.R.C. St. Leger, £1821; Carry On, third, V.R.C. St. Leger, £150; Carry On, second, River Handicap, £100; Carry On, first, Australian Cup, £1850; Kllla-rney, first, Leonard Stakes, £000; total, £4021. In these days of reduced prize-money (comments "Pilot”), that is a handsome return indeed. WAIMATE MEETING Some Prominent Runners Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, Marcii 18.
