Test Shipments to Britain GRANT FOR RESEARCH It was stated by the chairman, Mr. G. Shirtcliffe, at a meeting of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, that as a result of further negotiations the finances for the Dairy Research Institute for the current year have been stabilised, and the additional grant received from the Empire Marketing Board will be devoted particularly to the solution of cheese problems. “Detailed work in connection with the latter,” he said, “is being actively followed by the staff of the Dairy Research Institute in collaboration with the Hawera and Hamilton laboratories, and regular shipments of cheese processed by different methods are being forwarded to Great Britain for inspection by experts there. . , . ■ . “In addition, and with a view to improving butter quality, arrangements are being made to export trial shipments which possess a higher flavour than that common to the main export of New Zealand butter. This trial should give guidance as to the possibility of the Dominion being able to place on the English market a butter possessed of a flavour which will render it more palatable to the English taste and thus enable it to be better qualified to compete against the Danish and Continental supplies.”
