SUBSTITUTE FOR BLOOD
A chemical substitute for blood for use in emergency transfusions has been developed and used successfully in Omaha, Nebraska. The serum is called “normet” solution, and was named after an ancient French formula. It is credited with saving one life, as it was used in an operation on a negro dancer, stabbed through the heart in a knife fight. While scientists agree there is no substitute for matched blood in transfusions, it is not always possible to get it >n an emergency. The new serum is then used until the real articles can be obtained.
