There was a close division in the House of Commons on Friday during a debate on the Mines Department Supplementary Estimates, when in a small House the Government majority fell to 5, states a British official wireless message. A division was taken to an amendment to reduce the vote, the criticism being mainly directed against the payment of £7OOO yearly to Sir Ernest Gowers as chairman of the Coal Mines Reorganisation Commission. The amendment was defeated by 173 votes to 168; the minority included nine Labour members. Twenty Liberals voted with the Government.
