PETONE CENTRAL SCHOOL New Headmaster Welcomed Arranged, by the ex-pupils’ association, there was a large gathering-last-week at the school to welcome Mr. F. W. Moore, who was recently appointed headmaster of the Petone Central School, and Mrs. Moore. An outstanding feature was the number of ex-pupils present who had attended Petone Central School between forty and llfty years ago. Among them was Mr. C. R. Joplin, who was the first headmaster of the school when it was established 50 years ago. He delivered a brief address of welcome. Mr. J. C. Burns, the present headmaster of Petone West School, and himself au ex-pupil and an ex-teacher of 'Petone Central School, presided. Other exteachers of the school who were present, were Messrs. B. Kean, S. Duncan, and E. King. During the evening musical items were rendered by Misses L. Wright, Daisy Marshall, and Jewey Lewis, and Messrs. Millward, Muirhead, Glading, and Forresl ter. Afterwards a dance was held. MURITAI TENNIS CLUB Championship Finals The championship and handicap tournament held under the auspices of the Murital Tennis Club was brought to a conclusion on Saturday. Braund (12) beat L. Jones and M. V. Fisher (6), 60—51. Women’s doubles: Mrs. J. Robinson and Miss I. Bayfield (2) beat Miss V. Shortt and N. Wood (owe 4), 50—42. Mixed doubles: L. Jones and Miss I. Bayfield (4) beat D. K. Jenkins and Miss M. Wood (4). 50-45. Mather Cup competition (mixed doubles championship): Mr. and Mrsl W. P. Hollings beat R. J. Hartridge and Miss V. Shortt, 6-6, 6—l. CHILDREN’S DANCE The dance held on Saturday night at the Lower Hutt Scouts' Hall in aid of the earthquake relief fund proved .'most successful. There were over 150 boys and girls and little ones present " in such varied costumes that the task of the judges. Sir Alexander Roberts and Mr. and Mrs. D. S. Patrick, was a most difficult one. | . The decision of the judges, who also presented the prizes, was . as follows:— Best fancy costume. "Powder Puff,” Baby Wilson; most original costume, under 7, “Chinaman.” Peter Cavaye; best paper costume, “Fairy,” Lorna Mitchell; "Spinning Top,” Fay Doran; special' prize, “Butterfly,” Yvonne Brown; special prize, “Red Cross Nurse,” Lorna Clarke; special prize, “Drummer Boy,” Stewart Henry p. most original, “Bee,” Tommy Petheric; under 10 years, special prize, "Gainsborough Lady,” Myra McKay; most original, under 11 years, “Patches,” Gladys Lemor; “Kitchen Garden,” Desmond Cavaye: best fancy costume, “Indian,” Robert Whitehouse: over 12 years. “Hawaiian,” George Possel; “Heavenly Twins.” paper costume, Bill Jarvle and Charlie Murray; most original, “Nyal's Family Remedies.” Ethel Shaw: special prize. “Willow Pattern Tea-maid.” Eunice Haden; “Ruination." Peter Renshaw; “Snow Queen,' Hilda Webster. The winners of the Monte Carlo proved to be Bessy August and Marjory Macintosh. The ice-cream ' stall was presided over by Mrs. E. August and Mrs. Haden. The dance was held under the auspices of the combined Scout and ladies’ rifle club committees.
