Big Athletic Meeting CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIPS What promises to be one of the biggest athletic meetings yet held in New Zealand will take place at Athletic Park this af-' ternoon, beginning at 2.15. It will be the second and last occasion on which the Wellington public will have the opportunity of seeing the visiting trio of American amateur athletic stars in action. George Simpson, of Ohio, one of the world’s greatest sprinters, is on the scratch mark • in tliree special invitation handicap sprints. Against him will be C. H. Jenkins; of Wellington; Valk, of Otago; Pierson, of Invercargill; and several other leading performers. , The mile event promises as many thrills as all three sprints, combined. Rufus Kiser, of America, is to meet Gordon Bayne, of Petone, brilliant- mile national champion ; Randolph Rose, well-known record-holder, and MacDonald, of Wairarapa. Harlow Rothert, the American captain, will take part in the javelin, discus and shot-putting events. In the two last-named he has bettered Australian and New Zealand, records. An entertaining programme of events provides the rest of a wonderful afternoon’s sport. Admission to the ground is 1/- and admission to the grandstand 2/6. Cricket. Some interesting cricket should be seen this afternoon wlieu the games in the penultimate round of the senior championship competition will be concluded. Races for first-class keel yachts (Mills Cup) and second-class kepi yachts (Te Ruru Cup), and also • for ■ centreboard boats will be held this afternoon by the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club.
