Vice-Regal. The Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, presided at a meeting of the International Polar Year Committee at Government House on Thursday. In the evening her Excellency was present at a concert of the Salvation Army Home League. Lord and Lady Baden-Powell, who returned to Wellington yesterday from the South Island, were the guests of their Excellencies until their departure for Australia in the afternoon. In the evening their Excellencies were present at the Regent Theatre. Her Excellency will be present at a garden party to be given this afternoon at Lyall Bay under the auspices of the Wellington Free Kindergarten Association. Dr. E. Faber Fookes, of New Plymouth, is in Wellington at the Royal Oak Hotel. Mr. T. E. Crosse, a member of the Hawke’s Bay Electric Power Board, is at present confined to a private hospital. Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Barlow, of Christchurch ; Mr. and Mrs. H. V. Lawry, Dunedin; and Mr. and Mrs. S. L. Parsons, Wanganui, are guests at the Hotel St. George. Mr. W. S. Wheeler, representative for the Makara riding on the Makara County Council, was granted six months’ leave of absence by the council yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. H. Sheil, Melbourne, are staying at the Hotel St. George. ' Professor P. W. Robertson, professor of chemistry at Victoria University College, has returned from .a holiday trip to England and America. Coster,, who was formerly on newspaper staffs in Christchurch and Auckland, and who has worked recently for the “Evening Standard” and “Sunday Dispatch,” London, has been appointed assistant editor of “Nash’s Pall Mall Magazine.” Messrs. G. T. Lucas, J. W. Graham, J. Frew, W. Tonge and H. Clark, of Christchurch; J. M. Samson and H. Brown, Dunedin; P. Farvacque and H. Honore. France;'D. M. Finnigan, Auckland; H. F. Comfort, Feilding; J. F. Mitchell, Liverpool; and L. J. Shortt, Wanganui, are at the Grand Hotel. Mr. H. E. Schurcek, who for the last four years has been general manager for New ' Zealand for Warner Bros.’ First National Pictures Ltd., was tendered a luncheon by the Film Exchanges’ Association yesterday before he left for Sydney to become personal representative for Mr. Ralph Clark, head of the organisation with which Mr. Schureek has been associated. Mr. S. S._ Craig, president of the association was in the chair, and Mr. Schureek was presented with a travelling rug.
