CLOCKS GO BACK

Daylight Saving Ends OLD TIME TO-MORROW Despite agitation in some quarters for an extension beyond the statutory period of daylight saving, time and tide have waited for no man, and the benefits of the extra half-hour of daylight will end to-morrow, when the old time will be reverted to. It will therefore be necessary for the public to put back their timepieces 30 minutes before retiring to-night or else to do so at midnight. There were expectations that Parliament might decide during the present session to authorise the extension advocated, but so far nothing has been done in this connection, and the Summer Time Act therefore automatically operates on the regular date. It was considered by many that summer time might well be extended to the end of April or thereabouts, in which event the daylight gained would meet a real need in view of the vast amount of work to be done in the devastated Hawke’s Bay district. Health reasons have also been found to advance in favour of extension, the New Zealand branch of the British Medical Association, at its annual meeting this, month, having passed a resolution urging the Government to extend the period of daylight saving to the end of April as a matter of urgency and in the interest of public health, the opinion being expressed that the gain in daylight would improve the health and brighten the lives of people in an exceptionally adverse period. In addition to the enthusiasm of sporting devotees for the extra daylight, doctors have testified to its beneficial effect on public health.
