BIG FIELDS

Evening Athletic Events

ROSE BEATEN IN MILO

Some Close Finishes

Though a light wind was against ex* ceptional times being recorded, the athletic meeting held by the Wellington club at Athletic Park last evening produced a series of exciting and closely-contested races. »

In each event there were good fields, all the city clubs being well represented, and in the 220 yards event there were seven heats. Both the 600 yards and the * mile events drew exceptionally big fields, and the latter was particularly interesting, in that the Australian and New Zealand champion, R. A. Rose, was competing. ’ Though he was beaten by the other scratch man, G. Bayne, of Petone, Rose ran well, though it was apparent that he was well below form.

Among a number of exceedingly close finishes was that in the three mile cycle race, won by M. Gane, of the Wellington ■ club, who beat Ericsson, Miramar, by inches. W. Tonkin, Athletic, and S. J. Gudsell, Wellington, were separated by only a few feet at the end of the 880 yards’ walk.

There was a crowd of between five and six hundred people at the park, a fact which indicates that evening athletic meetings are most popular with the Wel- ' lington public. Detailed results of the events are as follow:—
