HELP MUST COME
Desperate Plight of Farmer Debtors
DUTY OF GOVERNMENT
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Rec. February 2, 8 p.m.).'
Sydney, February 2. Wheat farmers to-day are without credit for the first time in New South Wales history. Normally, the Rural Industries Branch, at this time of the season, is receiving sufficient repayments of advances to help fresh cases. Now, however, the farmers are to discharge these liabilities any more than their debts to the storekeepers. They can only be saved by action on the part of the Government as a whole, because the single deparmtent Is powerless to cope with the situation. The farmers point out that they can do nothing effective themselves. If outside help is not forthcoming they face ruin and probably starvation. AUSTRALIAN WHEAT Quality Weight Reduction (Rec. February 2,11.30 p.m.) Sydney, February 2. The average quality weight for New South Wales wheat was fixed to-day at 59} pounds to the Imperial bushel. Last season’s fair average quality standard was 61}. CUTS IN WAGES Appeal for Postponement (Rec. February 2, 9 p.m.) , Melbourne, February 2. The Federal Attorney-General, Mr. Frank Brennan, to-day lodged an affidavit before Judge Detheridge in chambers, furnishing various reasons on behalf of the Commonwealth Government In support of a postponement of the 10 per cent, wage cut in Federal awards which is due to operate to-day. It was stated that the Commonwealth Government was at present formulating a plan for the preservation of, national security and solvency, for the stimulation of industry and the restoration of credit, and for the alleviation of unemployment. The immediate operation of the 10 per cent, wage reduction might prove a serious, perhaps a fatal, impediment to the successful execution of that plan. Judge Dethrldge referred the application Into the Arbitration Court for argument on Wednesday.
