RATES REDUCED

New Plymouth Borough

£13,000 TO BE SAVED

Dominion Special Service. • New Plymouth, January 27. Rates were reduced by the New Plymouth Borough Council by 3-Bd. in the £l, when a special meeting considered the estimates for the next financial year. A policy of rigid economy will effect savings of £13,000 and the reduction of the levy was made notwithstanding the fact that an extra id. in the £1 will be required in order to meet commitments in connection with the drainage loan, a big work commenced a few months ago. In moving the reduction in rates, the Dlayor, Dlr. H. V. S. Griffiths, expressed himself as very satisfied that they could carry on the maintenance of the borough and yet reduce rates this year. He was sure such news would be very acceptable to ratepayers, and while nothing was provided for capital expenditure on streets, they would be fully maintained. It was unfortunate that £7200 had to be found to meet the loss on the Tramway Department, although they were hoping that revenue would increase. Taking all things into consideration, it was very satisfactory to be able to show a decided decrease in the'rates.
