THE RACING WORLD

NOTES AND COMMENTS

The Trentham Meeting’

PAHIATUA TO-MORROW

(By "The Watcher.”)

Nominations for the Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting, to be held on February 19 and 21, will close on Friday at 9 p.m.

Acceptances for the first day of the Egmont. Racing Club’s summer meeting, to be held on February 5 and i, will close on Friday at 8.30 p.m.

Last week’s meeting of the Wellington Racing Club was the silver jubilee oi the club at Trentham, tbe first meeting having been held there in January, 192 b. It also marked 25 years’ association with the club in various capacities of Mr. G. Gaudin.

Admiral Drake, having been purchased bv Mr. J. M. Samson last week, is an unlikely runner in the Pahiatua Cup, but Hoylake, who was at Trentham with Gay Crest and Adelphi, is to make the trip.

Fedora, 7.12, was omitted from the list of acceptors for the Calliope Handicap on the opening day at Takapuna this week. Her rehandicap was 51b. for her win at Trentham.

There is a possibility that the Lord Quex —Queen Lizzie three-year-old Ganpat may change hands.

A pleasing feature of the riding at Trentham was the greatly-improved form of the Auckland lightweight, XV. H. Jones. Jones has had a long run of bad luck, but he rode in his best form at Wellington. Killigrew and Little Thrush, both of which ran second, were two of bis mounts, and both paid long prices.

Royal Parade did not get a track t<» his liking either day he raced at the Wellington meeting so he should not be discarded for his failures. Goshawk is another who will do better on a hard track.

One of the most improved horses that came to the Wellington meeting was Al Jolson. He looks like developing , into a really good handicapper. During last week a correspondent wrote asking a question with regard to. Mister Gamp, and his Feilding performances. The letter unfortunately has been mislaid. If he will please write again the information will be published.

Footfall has broken down and his case looks so serious that be may not be raced again. At his best he was a good horse, a solid stayer, and he numbered a Dunedin Cup among his successes.

London “Sporting Life” says that Air. Sol Green’s horse, Strephon 11, is seen exercising on the roads with the others that will soon be undergoing solid preparations for the. coming fiat season. Reference is made to the apparently good prospects of the Australian horse.

The aged steeplechaser, Matu, looked well when paraded for sale at Trentham last week, but bidding for him was restricted and the Wingatui trainer, S. G. Ware, should soon get a return at the southern winter meetings. Matu is a good jumper and solid stayer who has never met with the best of luck during his career to date.

Mr. W. R. Kemball has decided to be represented at the C.J.C. midsummer meeting. and George Jones will go down with Lady Pam, Cape Gold, Maritime and Spear L »lr. E. Riddiford has leased Staghunter to the Trentham trainer, J. McLaughlin, and the gelding will probably be brought in to resume training immediately. Mr. W. R. Kemball has purchased the Hunting Song—Gaimint colt from A. Goodman, who secured him at the yearling sales for 125 guineas.

The yearling filly by Silverado from Limelight, passed at the Trentham sales, has been disposed of privately by her breeders, Messrs. J. W. and L. W. Storry, of Christchurch, to Mrs. W. D. Graham, New Plymouth. The youngster comes from a very successful family, so her future will be invested with considerable interest.

Tlie yeearling colt by Acre from Moorefield passed at the yearling sales last week has been secured privately by a patron of P. T. Hogan’s stables. He is a brother to Crown Area, a good winner when trained here by G. W. New. and later by the late J. McConibe. Crown Area is still racing in Sydney. '

No. 1 Family. The stallion Siegfried (1925), by Son-in-Law from Fire Mist, by Sunstar from Lorgnette by Isinglass—Galinne by Galopin. was landed from the Ruahine from England at the week-end. Siegfried, who has made a very favourable impression on those who have viewed him, was bred by Lord Howard de Walden, and has been imported by Mr. R. Holden, of Hawke’s Bay. He brings to New Zealand a new line of the No. 1 family.

Arrowsmith Dies. The stallion Arrowsmith (Chaucer — Sagitta) contracted an internal complaint, and died a few days ago. Arrowsmith was bred in England in 1915, and was imported by Mr. J. N. Heslop in. 1919. He proved himself a high-clnii performer while in training, among his successes being the C.J.C. Stewards’ Handicap in 1920, under the record weight of 9.13. the Greater Easter of the same year under 8.13. and also the 1920 Thompson Handicap under 9.9. At. the stud Arrowsmith has left some useful performers. Toxeuma is his best representative.

Solid and Consistent. Probably the most consistent and solid performer at the Wellington meeting wns the Acre gelding Cadland. Tn three starts he ran a second, a first and a second, the first two over a mile, and the last race at six furlongs. Cadland only got out of hacks at the Manawatu summer meeting, and these were his first appearances in o™iii company. He improved with every race, and they were hard ones at that, but the harder he was ridden the better he went. Cadland looks like winning a good handicap before the season ends, and his form is another tribute to his young trainer. L. G. Morris.

Should Do Better. .Taloux broke a long run of placed n« r ' formances when he won the Trial Plate at Trentham. He has previously been seen to advantage in strong compnn- over a distance, nnd it looks as if the longer the journey the better prospect he is. Having broken the ice he should go on ito more important successes.

Hones of a Stayer. It was easy to discern the idea at the back of the purchase of the brood mare Star Lady by .Mr. J. Porter last week. Star Lady is the dam to Martian of Star Stranger nnd Star God. Star Stranger is probably as sound a stayer as was over bred in the Dominion, while Star God though of moderate class here, proved himself a

good stayer in Australia. Mr. Porter is the owner of the Martian horse Martarma. who has retired to the stud after a brief but highly successful career, and no doubt he has hopes that, the Martian strain will nick again with the dam of Star Stranger. Nightmarch.

Nightmarch returned home to Riccarton without waiting for the concluding day at Trentham. He may be accorded a nomination in the Hazlett Gold Cup at the Dunedin meeting, a race which he won last year with a 101 b. penalty. Nightmarch will be a difficult horse to place. He has to carry big weights in handicaps, and if he goes to Sydney in the autumn he will be up against Phar Lap in the weight-for-age events. There were rumours at Trentham last week that he might be retired to the stud without doing much more racing. Freehold Sold.

The Absurd —Tahua gelding Freehold has been sold by Mr. W. McA. Duncan to Messrs. McLeod and Slater, of Hastings. Freehold ran second to Ridgemount at Ashhurst last week after getting badly away. He should be a good proposition round some of the minor meetings, for there is no question that fie has speed above the ordinary. Iliad Arrives.

The Elderslie Stud Co.’s English importation. Iliad, arrived at the week-end by the Ruahine, and is remaining on the boat until she reaches Lyttelton. Iliad, as already announced, 'is by Swynford from Pagan Sacrifice by Cicero—Simony by Common-Simon’s Bay by St. Simon. Iliad ran second in the last English Derby to Blenheim. A Good One.

One of the most impressive performances nt the Wellington meeting was that of True Shaft on Thursday. He carried 8.12 and won comfortably in time which was equal to that of Compensation, 7.8, in the open class, Compensation being flat out. This was True Shaft's best performance, though he raced well in Sydney last season. He will win open events later.

Worth Remembering. The Waimate gelding Mount Boa raced solidly at the Wellington meeting. He was a winner in the south prior to coming to Trentham. and had he go' away on terms with his field here he would probably have won. Mount Boa will be worth remembering if he returns here in the autumn for the Thompson Handicap.

New Zealanders in Australia. At the Canning Park (Perth) races on January 17 the Canning Purse, seven furlongs, was won by Zelandia (Leighton —Valvate). He was favourite, and, carrying 8.8. won by two lengths in Imin. 29 2-ssec. The Flying Handicap, seven furlongs, was won by John Bradbury (Paper Money—Paphia). Carrying 8.0, he won by a neck in Imin. 28 4-ssec. At Geelong on January 2f the Flying Handicap, about six furlongs, was won by Cupidon’s three-year-old half-sister Repast (Tea Tray—Bebe). Carrying 7.6, she won by two lengths in Imin. 14sec. At Victoria Park (Sydney) on January 21. the first division of the Flying Handicap, 44 furlongs, was won by Vallar (Valkyrian—Bellacity). He carried 8.11 and won by half a neck in 55Jsec. CornerolT’s Dam.

During the winter various suggestions were offered regarding the breeding of CornerofE, whose dam Nieppe does not figure in the Stud Book. According to reliable authority Nieppe is by Coronet (son of Vanguard) out of Nita Nita, raced one one dny only, starting three times for a first, a dead-heat for first, and.a second. Her grandam was supposed to have been stolen from an English officer, so may have been, and probably wns. an English thoroughbred mare.

A Big Team. Mrs. A. W. McDonald has a big team in training at Awapuni, and with a few fresh ones to come in during the next few days she expects to have 30 horses in work by the end of this month. Red Fuchsia, Elicit and Llyn Dhu are again among the active brigade, and though they have not. done a great deal yet, they are in good shape to start on their preparation for the winter jumping campaign. Corneroff has improved in appearance since he raced at the Grand National meeting and he. should be a good steeplechaser next winter. At PaJiiatua.

The annual meeting of the Pahiatua Racing Club will be held to-morrow and on Thursday. Since the last meeting the club has built a new stewards’ and official stand. The turf at Pahiatua ranks among the best for galloping, in the country, and with its long straight conditions are good for every horse. Acceptances for to-morrow are excellent, and with recent form to serve as a guide backers should not get far astray in their judgment. The Maidens.

Blacksmith, having won at Ashhurst, is not eligible for the maiden race at Pahiatua. The best form is that of Saltpot, Flute, and Lady Ronald.

Form Looks Good. Belle Star’s form at Ashhurst and at Trentham. where she led into the straight in the Summer Handicap, makes her a good prospect for the Ballance Highweight. Rameses having been purchased for the south is probably an absentee. Queen’s Choice and Balloon look likely, nnd Fine Acre in form would be a good prospect. Wanderlust and Baskier look possibilities. Belle Star and Baskier may do best.

Hack Sprinters. Statuary, Leisure. Golden Shadow and Arvada are the form horses in the Konini Handicap, and Royal Bengal showed up well at Trentham. Winloch also displayed form here. At the weights Golden Shadow ought to go well and Royal Bengal with improvement may also be prominent.

Gold Cup Field. Admiral Drake may be missing from the Gold Cup field, but on his Trentham form he has n great chance. Ruanui. Desert Song and The Swell should he well backed, 'and lightweights like Billion. Mount Shannon and Fitzquex have to be considered. Ruanui and Desert Song look likely. Werata did not show his right form at Trentham. and he is better placed in the Hamua Handicap, hut the opposition is not easy. Acmil, Spearform. Statuary, Rich Harvest nnd Brambletorn all have to be considered. Werata and Brambletorn seem a likely pair. Pakitere should go well in the Makuri Handicap, where Mahora, San Qiiex, Queen’s Salute and Arvada must also be considered. Pakitere and Arvada appeal.

The Sprinters. The Ridgemount-Belie Star bracket will be in demand in the President’s Handicap, where Portray. Lady Rene, Dobbin and Taranto present possibilities. Ridgemount finished fourth at Trentham on Saturday after his win at Ashhurst. This is good form, but he may decline his engagement, which is not unusual. Admiral Drake, if started, would be the pick. Tn his absence Ridgemount and Portray look best. On Wellington form Ifitzquex rather stands out in the Eketahuna Handicap. Pcwa looks a possibility, and if form is repeated Rotation should be i> the picture.
