AMATEUR ATHLETICS

Provincial Championships

AMERICANS’ TOUR

The Wellington provincial athletic championships will be decided at Athletic Park on February 7. This decision was arrived at by the executive committee of the Wellington Centre, New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, last evening. The Wairarapa Sub-Centre wrote stating that if the proposed cycle race from Wellington to Masterton, Palmerston, and back to Wellington, was held, it would be pleased to assist in carrying out arrangements in the Wairarapa. The Wairarapa Sub-Centre reported that in an endeavour to make the opening meeting of the American athletes’ tour at Masterton on January 22 a big success, it had extended an invitation to Rose, Savidan and Evans as a further attraction, and to give strong competition to the visitors. The sub-centre asked the centre to refrain from granting permits to other clubs which were likely to reduce the entries and attendance at its sports. A letter was reserved from the cycling sub-committee which expressed the opinion that, in view’ of the expenditure incurred by cyclists competing in events under the jurisdiction of .the centre, the centre, when next conferring on the matter of trophies, might consider the advisability of increasing the value of trophies awarded to cyclists. . The chairman stated that it had been the practice to make no difference between athletes and cyclists, and he did not think it advisable now to depart from that. No action was taken Americans’ Movements. Advice was received from the New Zealand Council that the American athletes. Simpson, Kiser, and Rothert. would leave San Francisco by the Monowai on December 24. They would arrive at Wellington on January 12. The amount of the Wellington guarantee was £2BO, which the council would be glad to have before December 11. It was decided to ask the New Zealand Council to invite Rose, Evans and Elliott to participate in the meetings to be held by the Wellington Centre on February 21 and March°2l, in connection with the visit of the American athletes.

Registration Fees. “When centres desire registration forms it will be necessary for the centre to forward to the council the registration fee for each form,” wrote the New Zealand Council. “If a centre desires 25 registration forms it will be necessary to forward 25/-. The reason for this is that in the past the majority of centres have failed to pay their registration fees. The overseas representative fund is at present being increased through no special effort on tbe part! of the centres. The fund is a very desirable one. and it behoves all centres to help to increase it.” It was decided to write to the council disagreeing with the proposal, and suggesting it find some other means of overcoming the difficulty. The programme for the Paraparaumu Amateur Athletic Club’s annual meeting on New Year’s Day was approved. It was pointed out to the club, however, that in future the programme should be submitted to the centre before it is printed. The opinion was expressed that, the number of trophies allotted to. junior events was rather small in comparison with those allocated to the open events.
