Accident in Shanghai

THREE KILLED, FOUR HURT

Shanghai, December 9.

The Hankow air mail crashed today in Shanghai while taking off. The pilot, Paul Baer, an American member of the Lafayette Escadrille, the co-pilot, a Chinese, and a passenger, Mrs. Andreeva, a Russian, were killed.

General Hsiung Shl-wei, a garrison commander, and three Chinese passengers were seriously injured. This is the first accident since the air mail has been inaugurated. NON-STOP ATTEMPT Air Ministry’s Aim MONOPLANE ORDERED (Ree. December 9, 10 p.m.) London, December 9. The. Air Ministry has ordered a long-range monoplane, the exact duplicate of the Fairy-Napier machine which crashed in last year’s non-stop London-to-Cape flight. With it the department hopes to capture the world’s non-stop record. On December 18, 1929, the Fairy mothplane which left on a non-stop flight from London to the Cape, crashed in the neighbourhood of Tunis. SquadronLeader A. G. Jones and Flight-Lieutenant N. H. Jenkins were killed. They were the only occupants of the machine. ALTITUDE RECORD High Flight in India VIEW OF HIMALAYAS (Rec. December 9, 10 p.m.) Delhi, December 9. Flying-Officer Matthews and Lieutenant Grylls, of the Royal Engineers, accomplished an altitude record for India yesterday by climbing 24.000 ft above New Delhi in 50 minutes. They obtained a wonderful view of the snowclad Himalayas without leaving the capital. HILL CARRIES ON Flight from Sourabaya (Ree. December 9, 10 p.m.) Weitevreden (Batavia), December 9. The Australian aviator Flight-Lieu-tenant Cedric Hill left Sourabaya, Java, this morning and arrived at Binia. ■ .
