Determined efforts are still being made to smuggle liquor into the United States from the sea, according to the annual report of Commissioner Doran. One preventive officer, he says, recently returned to headquarters saying that the progress of his men through a State sounded like the Battle of the Marne, as so many unseen rifles, fired at set distances, warned homefolk of their approach.

Last year Federal officers made 08,000 arrests, and there were 54,000 convictions. The fines exceeded £1,000,000. The Prohibition Department’s report adds that for the year ended June 30 gaol sentences aggregating over fourteen thousand years had been imposed on violators of the Volstead Act. A total of 567 charges of corruption among prohibition enforcement officials were investigated.

“In a very large proportion ot cases the charges were either absolutely disproved or dropped for lack of evidence,” said the report. Two million gallons of whisky were legally manufactured for medicinal purposes. A total of 86,33 automobiles valued at 3.290,000 dollars, and 64 boats were confiscated when found transporting liquor. »
