HUTT VALLEY GAS

Manufacture and Inspections Reporting to the Petone and Lower Hutt Gas Lighting Board last evening, the works manager, Mr. C. Shaw, stated that during November 9,850,000 cubic feet of gas were manufactured from 697 tons 1 cwt. of coal, an Increase of 1,456,000 cubic feet over November, 1929. On December 1 798 ' tons, 6cwt. 1 quarter of coal were in stock. During November 84 tons 13cwt. of coke were sold, leaving 169 tons Bcwt. of coke in stock on December 1. Tar sold during November totalled 5074 gallons, including 392 gallons to the New Zealand Railways, and 4576 gallons to the Lower Hutt Council. The estimated quantity of tar in stock on December 1 was 16,505 gallons. .■ - .. , The inspector, Mr. O. Silbery, reported that during November thirty-one new services were installed (6 in Petone and 25 in Lower Hutt), 33 cookers installed (11 in Petone and 22 in Lower Hutt). New three-inch cast-iron mains were .laid in Knight’s Road, Mahoe Street, Birch Street, and Oxford Terrace, ; a total of 82$ chains. ' . . ’ ■ - With a view to increasing the pressure to Cudby Street, the Oxford Terrace main was extended to link up Cudby Street with'Waterloo Road, eliminating the. dead the month the mains in Matai Street, Miro Street arid Massey. Avenue gave trouble, and on-investigation it was discovered that the 3in: main off Ludlow Crescent was completely blocked. Instead of a circuit these streets..were. .being, fed from Esire Crescent, which .was found to have dipped, blocking the main with Water. After a lot of trouble, the whole fault was remedied, by putting in four tail pieces through, the Matai Street easement, and opening up Ludlow Crescent main, and clearing the obstruction, which ■was found to have been longstanding. Several tests were made during November in Waterloo Road and Collingwood Street, and it was found that there was a fall in pressure during peak-load hours. It was the inspector’s intention, as soon as possible, to open up in different parts of the district to endeavour to remedy the trouble.
