EFFORTS AT RELIEF

Upper Hutt Unemployed

The town clerk of Upper Hutt Borough (Mr Harbord) reported to the council meeting last night that there were 38 married men and 7 single men registered in the borough as unemployed. In the same connection the mayor (Mr. P Bobertson) said that £69/4/10 J had been collected in the borough to secure funds for unemployed relief. This he considered was very satisfactory, and ne moved that a letter of appreciation be sent to Mrs. Bradley and her co-workers for the way in which they had endeavoured to help the council. It was further pointed out by the mayor that this sum would receive a £2 for £1 subsidy, thus bringing, the amount up to £2lO. When it was remarked that £2lO was not very much to divide among the number of unemployed, tlie suggestion was made that the Unemployment Board be asked to give an additional sum direct to the council, and not as a subsidy. This suggestion, which the mayor characterised as a good one, was agreed to. It was pointed out that nothing of the £19,00'0 which the board was distributing had been allocated to Upper Hutt Borough. In the matter of borough unemployment loans, advice was received that the borough solicitors had been successful in raising £3OO for the East Ward, the period being 20 years, the rate of interest 5J per cent., and a sinking fund of 3 per cent. They were expecting td fix the £4OO loans tor the West Ward within the present week.
