ROYALTY IN ENGLAND
The King and Queen of the Belgians arrived quietly and unobtrusively at Victoria station, London, the other evening, and, dispensing with .the usual diplomatic and other inevitable trappings which royalty are encaged wherever they go, stepped unnoticed into a waiting car and motored off to a “secret” destination (says the “Queen” of October 22). Actually King Albert and Queen Elizabeth have come over on a private visit to the Duke and Duchess of Portland at Langwell, the Portlands’ beautifully situated Scottish home in Caithness. The deer-stalking and grouse shooting at Langwell are excellent, and as . both the King and Queen are fond of the open air they are likely to have a delightful holia Langwell itself is about as remote and inaccessible a spot as one could wish for, for it is twelve miles from the nearest, railway station at Helmsdale. The Lodge is a large and very comfortable house, thanks largely to the Duchess's suggestions regarding the new wrings that have been added from time to time. At the moment there are six Queens staying in England. Her Majesty is at Sandringham, and her sister-in-law, Queen Maud of Norway, is near by at Appleton Hall, the home that King Edward gave her on condition that she spent so many months of the year there. The Queen of Spain is staying with her mother, Princess Beatrice, at Kensington Palace, together with her daughters, the Infantas Beatrice and Maria Christina. The ex-Queen of the Hellenes- has been staying with friends in Scotland, and, of course, ex-Queen. Amelia of Portugal has made this country her home for many years past.
