VIOLIN AND PIANO

Recital of Merit Consisting for the most part of compos!-, tions by comparatively early, composers, a concert of distinct artistic merit was given last evening by Mr. Trevor Fisher, pianist, and Mr. Richard Maunder, violinist, In the Parish Hall, Kurort Mr. Fisher by the performance created the immediate imiiression of being a Try finished player. He has an excellent conception of exactly what is required, and is able to bring Into play bis very adequate technique when the occasion demands. His first bracket consisted of four delightful old-time pieces, which were as cleanly and rhythmically played as one would wish. They were “Pavane (Byrd), “Allegro" (Handel) ~ “Pastorale,”, and "Tempo de Ballo” (Scarlatti). His second bracket was one which well taxes the technical and interpretative. powers of any pianist, but Mr. Fisher seemingly made Fight work of the three pieces. They were. “Rh- nsody in B Minor (Brahms), An dante’from Sonata iu B Flat Minor (Glazounov): an'd “Andante and Rondo Capricioso” (Mendelssohn). Mr. Fisher was obviously more at ease in the second bracket than in the first, and delibht d with his fresh and vigorous rendering of the Mendelssohn. As encores he played “Tarantelle” (Heller) and “Waltz (LeviS ARhough Mr. Maunder has many praiseworthy attributes, he did not create the same lin.ipression as Mr. 1 isher. He has undoubtedly much enthusiasm and is able to handle splendidly passages of a vigorous nature. The pieces selected, however, called in-the main for light treatment, but thev did not always receive it. He was, perhaps, at his best iu a Handel Sonata In A fir which be seemed temperamentally ’suited, though the following encore. “Minuet” (Mozart), Lacked the delicacy which the piece demands. . Mr. Maunder produces a full, resonant tone, of good quality, and he brought it into play In “Sonata in G Minor a particularly melodious work. He also played “Legeifde” (Wieniawskl and Rondn in G” (Mozart) in a finished style. An encore was “Melodic” (Tschaiko sky). Lhe two voung men are to be commended on a recital of such a standard of excellence.
