GARDEN AT TIMARU
Going to Christchurch To-day By Telegraph—Press Association. Tiniaru, December 6. Mr. Oscar Garden, accompanied by Captain Haig, arrived at Timaru from Dunedin this afternoon. The airmen were met some distance south by two ’planes of the Canterbury Aero Club and were escorted to Washdyke, a few miles north of Timaru, where the men were welcomed by several hundred people. The young aviator was then driven to Timaru and in the presence of several thousand he was officially welcomed to the town, where he resided k number of years, by the mayor, Mr. W. Angland. Mr. Garden later paid a flying visit to Temuka and in the evening was the guest of the aero club and municipal authorities at a dinner which was largely attended. . ± , Tiie airman will go to Christchurch early on Monday morning. KIA ORA’S ENGINE By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, December 6. “H should never have occurred,” stated Mr. Oscar Garden, on his return from Invercargill, discussing the breakdown of the Kia Ora’s engine when taking off from the Taieri Aerodrome on Thursday. Mr. Garden said that the engine was supposed to be completely overhauled at Sydney, and the metal fatigue of the connecting rod should have been noticed. The Aero Club has secured the loan of an engine for the Kia Ora through WingCommander S. Grant-Dalton, and the engine was delivered yesterday and was installed for the flight this afternoon to Tl Last 'night the Orkney and Shetland Islands Society presented Mr. Garden with a mounted gold nugget. It was mentioned that Mr. Garden’s grandfather was the Orkney’s greatest benefactor,, having presented a fully-equipped hospital for Kirkwall.
