PROMISING COLTS

Town v. Country Elevens ANNUAL CRICKET TRIAL That the Wellington province has some promising cricket colts coming along was shown in the annual Town v. Country match, which commenced at the Basin Reserve yesterday. Honours at the close of the day rested with the Country team, which scored 263 runs, and then dismissed four of the Town eleven, including C. S. Dempster, for 23' runs. Lowry, Gallichan, Norris, O’Brien, Cameron, and A. Newman all batted brightly for Country, while J. Newman bowled particularly well ' for Town. A. Newman, a brother of the Midland left-hander, was also in the limelight, as after scoring 21 runs, he secured two wickets for 2 runs, and took two smart catches in the slips. Unfortunate Start. T. C. Lowry won the toss, and the Country innings opened disastrously, three wickets falling for 25 runs. Play was painfully slow before lunch, to accurate bowling by J. Newman, Blundell, and Crook. Naismith, the Taranaki colt, after scoring 11, was beaten by a magnificent delivery by Crook, which swung away from the bat and broke back four inches to hit the sticks. Stephenson, the Napier representative, popped one from J. Newman into Airey’s hands at midoff. after notching 5. Pacey (Manawatu), who is usually a forcing batsman, was at the wickets an hour for three runs before being bowled by a trimmer from J. Newman, who at the end of seven overs had taken two wickets for three runs.

D. Cameron (Rangitikei) and W. E. Norris (Manawatu) put a better complexion upon things. Cameron twice. in succession slammed Blundell to the longon boundary, and Norris, a natty lefthander, handled his bat in a style very much resembling J. E. Mills, of Auckland. After the pair had added 58 for the fourth wicket, Cameron, who had reached 25, played round one from J. Newman. Lowry in Form. Lowry, the Country captain, then joined Norris, and at once showed that he is in something like his best form. He did not allow the ball to hit the bat, but sent it speeding to the boundary with a wide variety of shots, including some crisp square-cuts and some forceful hooks and pulls.

After reaching 45, Norris placed one from Blundell into Dempster’s hands. The Manawatu left-hander had been at the wickets for 90 minutes, and was warmly applauded for his stylish display. Lowry, after reaching 55, hit a glorious six to extra long-on off Crook, but was yorked in attempting to repeat the stroke off the next ball.

There was keen disappointment when T. P. Reaney, the stalwart Napier colt, fell l.b.w. to Blundell first ball.

The tea adjournment proved fatal to Massey, but Gallichan and O’Brien then got together, and made a stand which carried the total from 182 to v 226. Gallichan batted in most enterprising fashion, making finished strokes off all the bowlers, and timing and placing his shots well. When two short of his half-century, he was bowled by a break baek from J. Newman. He had been batting for 100 minutes, and showed the soundest of defence.

The Country team took digging out down to the last man, and some of the brightest batting of the innings was revealed for the last wicket, for which M. A. O’Brien (Napier) and A. Newman (Nelson) put on 37 runs. Both are enterprising batsmen, and were by no means over-awed by the reputations of the city bowlers. After A. Newman had scored 21, he was smartly caught in the slips by his brother Jack, off Warnes. O’Brien, who is a most promising colt, was left unbeaten with 35 to his credit. The innings, which had lasted 243 minutes, closed for 263. *

Good Bowling. J. Newman bowled remarkably well for Town, as off the 32 overs he sent down, only 57 runs were scored, and he captured four wickets. He kept going tirelessly, maintained an excellent length, and varied his pace and spin cleverly. Blundell and Crook also got through a day’s heavy work with distinct credit. The Town limings. Dempster and Hamilton opened the Town innings at 5.20, Massey and A. Newman taking up the attack. Dempster started confidently, square-cutting the first ball of the innings for four, and hitting nine off Massey’s first over. Lowry’s generalship here came into play. He replaced Massey by Reaney, who got Dempster caught in the slips in his first over. This started something like a panic, as three more wickets fell rapidly, and when stumps were drawn at 6 o’clock, four wickets were down for 23 runs. Dempster and Airey were both smartly caught in the slips by A. Newman, off Reaney, and Hamilton fell l.b.w. to A. Newman, who also had Hepburn caught in the slips by Naismith. A. Newman secured two wickets for 2 runs, and Reaney two for 8. The match will be resumed at 11 o clock this morning. ' The following are the scores: — COUNTRY.—First Innings. L. Pacey, b. Newman 2 O.
