FATHER GILBERT DEAD

Rector of St. Bede’s WORK AT ST. PATRICK’S By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, November 24. The death occurred to-night of the Rev. Father T. M. Gilbert, rector of St. Bede’s College, Christchurch. Father Gilbert was 47 years of age. [The late Father Gilbert was born in Kuinara, in 1883. He became a pupil of St. Patrick’s College, Wellington, when in after years he was to control, and from there he went to Meeanee, where he studied for the priesthood and was ordained. After his ordination, in 1906. he was attached to the teaching staff of St. Patrick’s College. ’He attended lectures at Victoria College and took successively the B.A. and M.A. degrees, winning a senior scholarship in Latin and taking first-class honours in Latin and English. Some twelve years later he was elevated to the rectorship of his old school. It was owing to In’s outstanding gifts that St. Patrick’s College became a foremost educational institution, and many young men have to thank him for sound instruction. Some nine years ago, Father Gilbert received the dignity of appointment as one of the delegates of the General Chapter of the Society of Mary in Europe. As an acknowledgment of his extreme fitness for the position of rector his tenure at St. Patrick’s was extended from six years to ten.
