WORSE THAN WINTER
Calls on Auckland Charity Dominion Special Service. Auckland, November 21. A difficult task is set the Relief Committee of the Auckland Hospital Board in dealing with cases of . distress as a direct result of the condition of the labour market. Applications for relief are double what they were at this time last year. A total of 550 cases was dealt with last week, 350 being those of ablebodied men who are out of work and who have families of varying sizes up to 12. There were many new cases of people who formerly had been in good circumstances. “We had an appalling experience at our meeting this week f having to provide help for those who had recently been discharged by firms which usually take on extra hands at this time of year,” said AV. K. Howitt, chairman of the Re lief Committee. Worse than normal midwinter conditions existed in the lab our market just a month before the Christinas season, when tilings usually commenced to improve. Every class of the community seemed to be affected, and many who were suffering from some disability. but who had for years been able to earn a living by selling side-lines and magazines, found that this work was not remunerative.
