NEW LOCOMOTIVES
First Two Completed
Designed for use for shunting operations or suburban work, two engines of the “C” class have been completed by the Railway Department. They are the first of an order for 24 which are to be built at the Hutt and Dunedin workshops.
These, engines are of the 2-6-2 type with double bogey tenders whose tanks slope down nnd backward similar to American switching locomotive tenders. The cylinders have a diameter of 14 inches with a 22in. stroke. The driving wheels have a diameter of 3ft. 9in.. and there is a tractive force of 13.7981 b., boiler pressure nt 80 degrees being 1801 b. to the square inch. The tender carries 2000 gallons of water and four tons of coal.
The engines are superheated, having tenders fitted with combined multiple valve throttles. The weight of the engine and tender in working order is 66J tons.
