HUTT PLUNKET FETE

A particularly successful. garden fete took place on Saturday afternoon at the residence of Captain and Mrs. W. Olphert, “Harptree,” Waiwhetu Road, Lower Hutt. It was held in aid of the room which the sub-branch of the Plunket Society hope will soon be erected in that district for the Plunket Society, which at present rents the Salvation Army hall at Waiwhetu. Mr. Walter Nash, .M.P., who was introduced bv Mrs. Olphert, declared' the fete open a I in doing so said that before icavin., for Honolulu, he had gone to” Dr. Truby King, who had given him a resume of the Plunket, aims, so that while he was in that city, he was abl? to giye the residents there some idea Of the work the Plunket Society was accomplishing in New Zealand. He complimented the society on its progress, and de-, dared the fete open. Mrs. Olphert presented. Mrs. Nash with a bouquet of pink roses, sweet peas and maidenhair fern. The bouquet was the work of Mrs. P. G. Reid. Well-stocked stalls were arranged in the spacious grounds,' and aS’ there was an attendance of- over 300 persons, good business was done. The stallholders were as follow :—Fan-/ cy stall: Mi's. Nicholls and Miss N. Dudley. Flower stall: Mrs. E. P. R6id. Cake stall: Mrs. Nicholls and Mrs. Mackesaek. Ice-cream stall: Mrs. D. S. Patrick. Christmas tree- Barbara Olphert nnd Barbara Mackesaek. Produce stall: Mrs. C. B. Robinson and John Olphert. There was a miniature golf links at tho back, near the tennis court, which caused much entertainment. Shortly after the commencement of the fete a baby show took place, Mrs. Henry Hall being tlie judge, and fully, 00 babies Vere entered, the result being as follows:—Under throe months: Juanita Collins, 1; Dennis Theaker, 2. The “ following twins, were awarded prizes: Shirley and Arthur Moore. 1 ; Elvti and June Kenyes, 2; the Wakefield, twins, 3. , Prizes were awarded the babies., nnd tbe mothers of those who had gained first prizes wore presented With prizes for themselves. The winner of the raffle .for the.. Christmas dinner wus announced during' the 'afternoon and proved to be Mr. Benstcad. of the Hutt. The official table was tastefully decorated with Iceland poppies uiid copper birch.
