DIRE NEED
Distress in Dunedin CHRISTMAS APPEAL By Telegraph.—l’tesi Association. Dunedin, November 22. Saying that the position of many people at present was desperate, the Manor of Dunedin appealed at a meeting of his relief committee to all citizens of Otago to assist to brighten the lot of those less fortunate a little during the Christmas season. He could assure citizens that there were cases of diro need in the city. ... Mr. Syder. agent of the Patients’ and Prisoners’ Aid Society, gave one instance of distress that came, before his notice that morning. A man whose wife had been in bad health for the last two years had a family of six. That morning hq got up and made a big pot of porridge and fried a little bread—all he had. The children sat round the table, and were given their share. It hurt him very much when a wee boy said: “Dad, another piece, please,” and lie had none to give him. Mr. Syder said that he assisted the man as far as he could, but that was only one instance.
