MOERA RATES

Increases Objected To Among the many grievances ventilated at a meeting of the Moera Ratepayers’ League last week wqs the increase in Lower Hutt Borough Council rates. “As far as this settlement is concerned,” said the chairman, “the rates have gone up just on £1 in each of the four years, the settlement has been in existence. We wete given to understand that the rates would not be more than £9. There are people also, on one side of the road, paying higher rates than people on the other side. There is nothing uniform about the rating system, and. in most cases they have gone up £4. This loagiie considers tho increases exorbitant.' and contends the ratepayers of Moera are being exploited. The people ace getting no return for their money. We want to know if the council is going to do anything for us. We consider the settlement is the Government’s Concern, and the Government should be carrying out the work and not the council. The Government shbuld have full control, if things are to be carried out on the model plan. It should not be. left to the council to strike the rates. We would get a better return from the Government.” There was even a suggestion made at the. meeting that steps should be taken to se if Moera could not be severed from the Hutt Borough and placed udder the control of the Government.
