Palmerston Celebrates GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE Falmerston North, November 2L To-day, the fifth day of the Palmerston North city status celebrations, was devoted to entertaining old settlers. A .procession of 80 cars carrying old identities, who had been in residence in Palmerston North for 40 years or more, led by the mavor and mayoress, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Graham, circled the Square and then journeyed to the showgrounds, where a short divine service was conducted by the Rev. D. Mclvor, of Marton. On the platform were Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P., and Mrs. Nash. Mr. and Mrs. P. Small. Mr. nnd Mrs. S. Abrahams, Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Mansford, and Mr. XV. J. Moffat, mayor of NelThe service commenced with the_ singing of the National Anthem, and was followed by a hymn. After the Scriptural reading a two minutes' silence for the, pioneeers who have passed away was observed. “The amazing -progress of this district for the last sixty years is adequate cause for deep satisfaction and much rejoicing. The celebrations now being held are more than justified, and at the heart of them there is doubtless a dominant note of thanksgiving. This is indeed the occasion when preparatory labours of early settlers should receive special notice, message delivered by the Rev. D. Mclvor in addressing the . large assemblage. , At the conclusion of the service a luncheon was held in the produce hall, where the pioneers exchanged reminiscences or the days of old. Proceedings were enlivened by appropriate music by the Garrison Band. ’ , The following message was Reived from the Governor-General, Lord Bledislpe. “All good wishes to the old pioneers. May God’s blessing be with them. Xhat Palmerston North is now a city, and a prosperous one, is due Ln no small measure to the initiative and enterprise of - its early, pioneers.” '
