ORPHANS’ CLUB

ANNUAL LADIES’ NIGHT.

The Wellington Orphans’ Club entertained their lady friends at the annual event devoted to that purpose last night, the function being held in the Masonic Hall, which was filled with members and guests. The president, Mr. W. H. Bennett, welcomed the guests, and hoped nil would have a friendly and enjoyable evening. The programme was similar to that given on the usual club nights, except that the orphans had,secured the services of two ladies to add to it. The- orchestra, under the direction of Mr Godie, played two selections from “The Desert Song”' and “The Student Prince,” and later Mr. Leon de Manny played a violin solo, “Andante and Kinale,” from the "Concerto in E Minor,” by Mendelssohn. Madame de Mauny played his accompaniment. Mr. L. Bent gave a baritone song, “Parted,” with violin obbligato by Mr. IV. Unsworth; Mr. A. Elston was heard in humorous songs, and his son played his accompaniments; Mr. Wilbur Davies gave some of his nautical songs; and Mrs. Wilbur Davies a clever whistling solo; Mr. Barton Ginger recited, and in response to, an encore gave his popular sketch of “The Vicar”; Mr. Clement May gave a character sketch,; and Mr. A. R. Brokensjiirc a humorous item; while Miss Nora Green sang “The Hills of Donegal ’ (Sanderson). At the conclusion of the 'programme supper was served. During the supper interval the committee was busy clearing the hall, and on their return guests found the floor ready, and thereafter dancing was the order of the evening. Rudolph’s orchestra supplying, the musie. The programmes were hi themselves humorous items, supplied by the secretary, Mr. T. S. Philpott, and added to the fun of . the evening. Mrs. W. H. Bennett, wife of the president, was present, wearing wine red silk and a fur coat, and also present were: Dr. A. Izard, Sir John and Lady Luke, and Mr. R. K. Lyon, secretary of the Savage Club, and Mrs; Lyon.
