ENGLISH FOOTBALLERS IN AUSTRIA
Much to the disappointment of a great crowd of 60,000, an English international team played a goalless draw against Austria at Vienna in a match that produced very little excitement. The Englishmen played pretty football, and their technique, according to the Austrian experts, was much superior to that of the home side. “The best team we have sccu since the war, ’ was the final verdict and. in saying this, there was much satisfaction (bat. their team had drawn with the “English masters.”
Commenting ou the match, the “Nene /Freie Press” says:— “The results of the matches at Berlin and Vienna prove that the great superiority of the English over Continental teams has now vanished, although the English players still show better technique and training.” The “Sport Tagblatt” says that the English shot as badly as the Viennese. The “Relchspost," too, finds the English cannot shoot, but adds that their work was wonderfully exact.
In general, the Vienna journals blame the Austrian team more than the English for the lack of thrills.
