Woman Knocked Down MAN CONVICTED Muttering at each other across The courtroom, a party of residents of Tory Street district had conflicting stories to tell in the Police Court yesterday of drink and spite, bad language and blows, when Patrick Lockett (Mr. Meltzer) was charged with assaulting Annie Yarrow. Defendant was convicted and fined.

Complainant said in evidence that prior to the affair she had appeared against defendant in a civil court action. At 1.14 p.m. last Monday witness saw Mrs. Lockett, wife of defendant, in Tory Street. Mrs. Lockett called out: “Padly, Paddy, come and, put the boot into the Defendant came and hit witness in the eye and then under the jaw. Witness was knocked unconscious until she was picked up. She had to have her face tied up and went to the doctor with a black eye. Elizabeth Kilminster, married woman, deposed that she was in company with Mrs. Yarrow on the day of the affair. Complainant went up to Mrs. Lockett and told her not to continue blackening her (Mrs. Yarrow’s) character. Witness corroborated the evidence of the assault, and said that after defendant knocked Mrs. Yarrow down he kicked her twice.

A girl of 11 years gave corroborative evidence.

For the defence, Mr. Meltzer said Mrs. Yarrow was drunk at the time and had deliberately come across the road and assaulted Mrs. Lockett. Defendant had merely thrown Mrs. Yarrow off and her injuries were sustained. when she fell because of her drunken condition. Two witnesses gave evidence in support of this. The magistrate said he considered the charge had been established, and he proposed to convict. Sub-Inspector Lopdell stated that defendant had a list of convictions. "He is an associate of drinkers and people of very low repute. He cannot say anything against the lowest of them.” A fine of £5 was imposed, in default one month's imprisonmen.

An Old Offender William John Parker, alias Richard Palmer, alias Sanderson, aged 54, pleaded guilty to charges of drunkenness and stealing a camera and woman’s gold wristlet watch, of a total value of £5 10/-. the property of Lily May Saddler. “He seems to be ill and out of prison fill the time lately,” said Sub-Inspector Lopdell. The articles had been stolen from a room in the Foresters' Arms Hotel. The magistrate, remarking that accused had a long list of previous convictions, including those for theft, sentenced him to six months’ imprisonment on the major charge. On the other count Parker was convicted and discharged. Theft of a Net William Edward Duncan did n6t Appear when charged with the theft of a fishing net, value £2, the property of William A. Pirie. Complainant gave -evidence that after bringing the net jishore at Eastbourne he left it on the beach above high-wdter mark. Later he missed-it and made inquiries. In company with a constable he found the net In a' back-yard. It had been mended. Defendant was convicted and fined ±<> and ordered to pay costs, in default one month's imprisonment. Concert Disturbed. A concert held at the Opera House on Tuesday was disturbed by some young men, who were brought before the court and fined. , ... , ~ Arthur James Chalmers admitted his guilt, but Percy Love, .William MornSon, and Ronald Arthur Nolan denied the charge, while Herbert Love did not apPe Sub-Inspector Lopdell said eight boys were concerned in the affair, but the remainder were coming before the Lhild Welfare Court to-day. They were all together in the upper circle. Chalmers was lying on a seat playing a mouth-organ, and the others were stamping their feet, singing and whistling. Each was fined £5. and they were ordered to share the costs, payment to be mafle at . the rate of £1 a week.
