OBITUARY

Mr. John Mead

The death occurred on July 11 at Foxhill, states a “Dominion” Special Service message from Palmerston North, of an old settler, Mr, John Mead, at the age of 81 years. Mr. Mead was born in Northamshire, England, and came to New Zealand as a child of 6 in 1856, with his father, Mr. Walter Mead, and three brothers. They made their home near the Wai-iti River, and Mr. Mead had occupied part of their original property until his death. He married Miss Mary Louden and thfe couple have resided in Foxhill practically all their lives.

Beside the widow, there are left nine sons and three daughters. The sons are: Charles Mead (Belgrove), Archibald Mead (Otago), John Mead (Hiwipango), Frank Meitd (Opotiki), Roderick Mead (Gisborne district), Graham Mead (Wakefield), Campbell Mead (Tahuna), Murray Mead (Howard), and Gordon Mead (Gisborne district). The daughters are Mrs. Irvine (Palmerston North), Miss Mead (Palmerston North) and Mrs. Manifold (Motueka). There are numerous grandchildren.

Mr. A. Philpott

Mr. Alfred Philpott, who died at Auckland on Thursday, was the leading New Zealand authority on lepidoptera, and his researches were constantly quoted by workers in other lands (states a Press Association message from Nelson). He was assistant entomologist at the Gawthron Institute for many years, and successfully introduced aphelinus, _. the enemy of woolly aphis, which previously caused so much loss in fruit orchards. Retiring from the staff of the institute, he continued for a time as honorary research worker until August last, when he removed to Auckland, where he carried out entomological work at the Auckland Institute and Museum.

Previous to going to Nelson the late Mr. Philpott was a resident of Invercargill, where he was curator of the Southland Museum. He was also a well-known authority on literary subjects.

Mr. A. M. Murray

The death occurred suddenly at Wellington on Thursday of Mr. Andrew McDonald Murray. He was born at Edinburgh, Scotland, sixty-four years ago. He has been connected with the general merchandise business in New Zealand for many years. Mr. Murray was an executive of the firm of McKerras and Hazlett, Invercargill, for fifteen years. Upon coming to the North Island he managed the merchandise department of Messrs. A. Hatrick and Go., Wanganui, for eight years, and at the time of his death he occupied a similar position with Messrs. Burns, Philp and Co., Ltd., of Wellington, having been connected with this firm since 1922.

Mr. Murray leaves a widow, two sons, and four daughters.

Death of a Pioneer

The death of a New Zealand pioneer, Mrs. Elizabeth Elliott Anderson, occurred in Geraldine recently, in her 82nd year, says a Christchurch paper. The late Mrs. Anderson, who was a daughter of Mr. William Paterson, was born at Inverness in 1849, coming to New Zealand with her parents in the ship Alpine in 1859. After landing at Port Chalmers, the familv went by bullock dray to Moa Flat station. Mrs. Anderson was married at Wangaloa in 1869 to William Kennedy Anderson, who was born at Lochaber, near Fort William, Inverness, and who came to New Zealand with his parents in 1857.

In 1874 Mr. and Mrs. Anderson went to Oamaru, subsequently residing in Christohurch, Timaru, and in Geraldine, Where the former’s death took place in 1921. There were fiino children in her family, one of whom died in infancy, and the following survive her: Miss Anderson, Christchurch; Mesdames Rodman, Geraldine; Coojior, Auckland; and Messrs. W I-*. Anderson, Belfast; O. W. A. Anderson, Melbourne; James A. Anderson, Wellington; T. P. Anderson, New Plymouth ; and John E. Anderson, Christchurch.
