OBITUARY
Mr. A. J. Rand The death of Mr. Alexander John Rand, of Perth. Western Australia, and formerly of Wellington, occurred on Monday as the result of a motor accident. The late Mr. Rand was born in Hants, England, about 64 years ago. His early life was spent with his parents in Cohstantinople, where his father, the late H. T. Rand, held an official position. In his late ’teens, he came . to. Australia, where he spent a few .years on Victorian and New South Wales stations. In 1889 he married Elizabeth Grace Brumley, of Eaglehawk, Melbourne. He came across to New Zealand about 1892, settling in Wellington, and engaged in business as a building contractor, timber merchant, etc. While in Wellington he took a great interest in public affairs. He was a member of the Wellington City Licensing Bench, and he also served on the Wellington South Licensing Bench. He was also chairman of the Newtown School Committee for. n number of years, and president of the School Committees’ Association of the Wellington education district. He was an elder of St. James’s Presbyterian Church. He left Wellington about 19 years ago, and after short residences in New Plymouth and Auckland, returned to Australia, being iii business at Lindfield, North Sydney, for several years. Here also he took a keen interest in local affairs, and was a member of various societies, a member of the Ku-ring-gai Shire Council, and a Commissioner of the Peace. In 1927 he left Sydney for Perth, Western Australia, where he was building up a fresh business when his death occurred. He leaves a widow, four daughters—-Mrs. E. Fildes and Miss Grace E. Rand, of Perth, Miss Frances Olive Rand, of Sydney, and Mi’s. C. Williams, of West Wyalong, New South Wales; and two sons—Messrs. Richard John Rand, of Perth, and Henry George Rand, of Whakatane, Bay of Plenty—and four grandchildren.
