TROTTING

Ashburton Winter Meeting FIELDS REVIEWED

The various meetings of the Ashburton Trotting Club are always popular, but the winter meeting which is being held to-day baa added interest by reason of the fact that the New Zealand Sapling Stakes is Included in the programme. The fields are briefly reviewed hereunder: — TRIAL HANDICAP, of 150 sovs. 3.45 class. One mile and a-half. Author Willings scr Princess Thea . ser Clapham scr Real Girl ser Cera Locanda . scr Zane scr Desert Rey ... scr Major Brent .. 12 Gold Country . scr Glenville 48 Harvest Junior scr Mary Locanda 48 Logan Fraser . scr Author Franz . 48 Lola Bingen .. scr Great D’Oro .... 81

Of those engaged in the Trial Handicap, Glenville has the smartest performance to her credit, as at Ashburton In April last she registered 3.26 1-5 when she ran second to Derry Pointer in the Improvers’ Handicap. In that race Author Willings was placed fourth, so that he, too, must have several seconds in hand. Of the others, Author Franz and Great D’Oro may do best. Of this pair, the first-named has failed to do any good this season, but at Ashburton last June she ran third at a mile and a half, registering 3.31 4-5. Great D’Oro has a win and three placed performances to . Ids credit. At Wellington in January he registered 3.45 over 13 furlongs, which works back to about 3.28 for 12 furlongs. All things considered. Author Willings may be installed favourite from Glenville and Great D'Oro.

LONGBEACH HANDICAP, of 175 sovs. 3.50 class. One mile and a-half. Enigma scr Lough Guy ... 3(5 Gladsome . Kilbirnie Dan . 3(5 Audubon scr Esblne 48 Iwanta scr Kittie Patch .. 84 Joan Dillon ... scr Toheroa St Merrijiggs .—. scr Great Burton .. 90 Pattie Bingen . scr Mickey Audubon 108 Quineey Thorpe scr Home Voyage . 168 Lucky Voyage . 12 To me, Enigma reads best of those on scratch in the Lougbeach Handicap, for at Timaru in Starch he ran third to Mickey Audubon and Great Harvester when in receipt of only 48 yards from the winner. Now there is 10S yards between them. Lucky Voyage has not done a great deal of racing, but last season she ran third nt Gore, covering 12 furlongs in 3.46 4-5. Kilbirnie Dan and Lough Guy are a couple of promising youngsters, they having run a dead-heat for second behind White Satin in the New Zealand Sires’ Produce Stakes at Forbury, when they recorded 3.43 2-5. Kitty Patch is consistent, and at New Brighton in March ran second to Mickey Audubon when they were handicapped on equal terms, Kitty Patch recording 3.41 4-5. Mickey Audubon may be able to account for Great Burton and Home Voyage. The three that may lead the field home may prove to be Enigma, Lough Guy, and Kilbirnie Dan. The two latter will be bracketed.

ASHBURTON COUNTY HANDICAP, of 500 sovs. 4.32 class. Two miles. Arikl Toascr Maiwharlti .... 36 Great Logan .. scr The Shrew .... 36 Huon Denver . scr Atlialone 48 Wrackeen scr Linkman 60 Muriel de Oro. 24 Sunshower .... 60 Omaha 24 Trampfast .... 60 Pluto 24 Quality 84 The Ashburton County Handicap bears a somewhat open appearance, and a good race should result. Arikl Tea is a capable sort, but so far has not recorded better than 4.34, which was what be did when he won at Wellington in February last. On that occasion Great Logan, who was conceding 12 yards, was third. At Oamaru last month Huon DonT er and Great Logan (24yds.l ran third and fourth respectively in the President’s Handicap. This was Huon Denver s best effort for some time, and if he has really struck form again he should be hard to beat, as he has a record of 4.-8 3-o against his name. Wrackeen ran a second and a third at Forbury, and while she can bedepended upon to run an honest race Ido not fanev her chances over much. standing her failure at Forbury the second day, one likes to have Murid de Oro on his side. Omaha and Pluto cannot be passed over lightly, more particularly Pluto? as at Ashburton in April he was third to Carmel and The Shrew, and he now meets-the latter on 12 yards better terms. Then it would also appear that the Ashburton course suits him, as in De cember he ran third to Eil1 ? ®2L?" d <uvds’ lone to whom he was conecding -.-tyas. and ’ 36yds. respectively—now he receives °4vds from Atbalone. Of the remainder I prefer Linkman. Possibly Huon I3en_ycr, Pluto, and Murid do Oro will do best. NEW ZEALAND SAPLING ST.-.KES (in bar™ s), of 650 sovs. For two-year-olds. One mile and a-half. . G. McMillan’s b. g. Checkers, Worthy Bond—Fancy Pointer. H. F. Nicoll's ch. f. Flying Cloud, Wrack —Pearlchild. H. F. Nicoll’s b. f. Arethusa, Wrack— T'rlx Pointer. J. Kinley’s b. g. Misses Hamilton and Verity’s ch. £., Rey de Oro —Rothschild marc. D. L. McKay’s b. f., Rey de Oro—Sincerity. R. C. Flsken’s ch. g., Pc ter wah—Harold Dillon mare. So far as public form is concerned, Arethusa, Red Shadow and Royal Chenault appear to hold tho best chances. The first-named won at Ashburton recently from Red Shadow and Logaleen. her time being 3.31, while that of Red Shadow was only one-fifth of a second slower. In the race, however, Arethusa lost some ground, and this enhanced the value of her; performance. Royal Chenault comes from M. B. Edwards’s stable. He contested the Glendorc Trot Handicap at the Hororata meeting In April, running second to Lord Matchlight. No doubt Arethusa and Red Shadow will carry most money. WINTER HANDICAP, of 225 sovs. 2.49 class. One mile and a-qiiartcr. Apex scr Double Event . 12 Bay Nut scr Kotuku Jack .. 12 Fair Wave .... scr Rey Logan ... 12 Great Triumph scr Trimmer 12 John Jinks .... scr Avenger 24 Nelson de Oro. scr Granite City .. 24 Nelson McElwyn scr Steel All 24 Roval Comrade scr Pluto 36 Shady Spot ... scr Wrackeen 36 Warepa •scr If John Jinks can be Induced to go away correctly in the Winter Handicap he will’ be a difficult horse to beat as he is a brilliant pueer. Nelson de Oro won comfortably at Forbury in May.-covering 1furlongs in 3.23. At the last meeting at Addington Rey Logan showed a return to form by running second to Proud Dillon over a mile in 2.13 3-5, Nelson McElwyn, who was third, registering 2.15 4-5. he first day at Forbury Hoy.il Comrade fin-, ished ahead of Warepa. but the latter did best the second day. In what promises to be a keen contest. Nelson de Oro, Rey Logan and Royal Comrade may have their numbers hoisted. ACTON HANDICAP, of 175 sovs. 3.30 class. Oue mile and a-half. Bessie Huon .. scr Editor 36 Kensitas scr Wild Voyage .. 36 Kautoma scr Aleron 48 Babv Logan .. scr Regal Voyage . 48 Erin’s Lynn .. 12 Marlnca 48 Lvdia 12 Wakataua 48 Mac Dillon .... 12 Vecto 60 Arikl 12 Warepa 60 In the Acton Handicap Lydia, Aleron, Editor and Regal Voyage are a likely quartet. Lydia raced somewhat disappointingly nt Forbury. but may go better at Ashburton. Aleron is a smart pacer, and nt Addington in September won over 12 furlongs iu 3.22. Editor won at Ashburton In April, going 3.24 4-5. while be also raced prominently at Addington last month. Regal Vovage won a double at Forbury and did not have to do her best in either race. Notwithstanding her penalty. Regal Voyage may be Iu most demand from Aleron and Editor. STEWARDS’ HANDICAP, of 200 sovs. 4.52 class. Two miles. Accumulator .. scr Tim Wood .... SB Great Burton .. scr Scuttle 48 Mat Voyage .. scr Flfa 60 Repeta Mac .. scr Tot Logan .... 60 Klug’s Voyage 12 Great Amazon . 60 Wattle Patch . 12 Gcmllght 72 Home Voyage . 36 Midland 72 Repute 36 Oval 72 The straight-out trotters will be seen in action in the Stewards’ Handicap. King’s .Voyage ran second to Scuttle at Ashburton

in April when in receipt of 24 yards: now there is 36 yards between them. Wattle Patch won at Oamaru from New Metford and Fifa, and now meets the latter on 24 yards better terms. Repute raced well at Addington last month, and it will occasion no surprise if she fights out the finish of this race with Wattle Patch and Klug’s Voyage. ,

FAREWELL HANDICAP, of 175 sovs. 2.19 class. One mile.

Happy’Land .. scr Brook Pointer . 12 Harley Dillon. scr Erin’s Lynn .. 12 Kinney Dillon . ser Harold Lee ... 12 Tahoe scr Country King .. 12 Tannhauser ... scr Mac Dillon .... 12 Yoicks scr Young Bingen . 12 Kautoma scr Tamatakuru .. 12 Wild Spur .... scr \

The Farewell Handicap is sure to find plenty of support forthcoming for Happy Land. Country King and Youug Bingen. Happy Land has a couple of wins and a second to his credit out of four attempts, and this suggests that he Is above the average. Country King, after racing well at Addington, scored a win in the Woodside Handicap at the recent Forbury meeting. Young Bingen has not Won a race so far this season, but be has been placed on three occasions and at New Brighton in March registered 2.15 2-5, when lie ran second to 171 Direct. Kinney Dillon is speedy, but is not too reliable. Tannhauser has raced once only this year. This was at Methven. where he won by twelve lengths in 2.16 2-5. On that form be is a possibility. Recent form, however, points to Country King and Happy Land. , AUCKLAND MEETING Acceptances Received By Telegraph.—fress Association. Auckland, June 13.
