AMENDMENTS IN LORDS CARRIED AGAINST GOVERNMENT Loudon, May 14. In the House of Lords in committee of the Coal Bill, the Duke of Northumberland’s amendment for the omission of the compulsory amalgamation clauses was carried against the Government by 147 votes to 28. His further amendment placing the power of initiating amalgamations with the Board of Trade instead of the proposed reorganisation eommissloii"rs, was carried without division. I'ther amendments j were adopted slmihuly against the I Government.
