SEGRAVE’S RECORD NOT REACHED COURSE IMPERFECT Daytona Beach, April 10. Kaye Don drove his great car over the course for the sixth time, but, principally on account of the condition of the beach, was unable to do better than 182.741 miles an hour. At the end of four trips over the nine-mile course he gave up for the day, laying the blame on the imperfect course and the fact that the windshield was clouded was a severe handicap, especially while he was south-bound. “With the windshield clouded,” Don said, “I can easily understand how Lockhart ran his car into the ocean here a year ago.” Since Don last ran fire has destroyed two-thirds of the wooden stand. For this reason few persons watched the runs to-day. Don first came to the beach to-day driving a stock model roadster to feel out the course, but he got no further than the kilometer mark when he was forced to stop with a burned-out bearing. On the first run south with the racer Don tossed off the protective disc from one wheel. The loss was neither serious nor dangerous. National guardsmen were unable to find the lost disc. Although there was trouble once as a result of backfiring, experts are encouraged over the car’s performance. The car since undergoing readjustments has gained acceleration. The supercharges for the first time emitted a piercing whine, indicating that their speed had increased and the pressure was greater. This is what Don has been striving for.
