BOWLS

RINKS CHAMPIONSHIP KELBURN (LOWRY) THE WINNER Before a game of the Bowling Centre’s champion rinks competition was played, the Kelburn Club s representatives were freely spoken of as the winners. That club has of recent years turned out some very fine players, and has by sheer merit risen to the top. This may well be said to be the case this year, as of the three centre ehampionhhips the Kelburn Club has won two-y-tlie singles, won by Routley, and the rinks, won yesterday by a very sound four skipped by Lowry (who. by the way, did not learn his bowls on the hilltop). Yesterday's event interested a great many bowlers, bnt the conditions were not nearly so good as they were the day before. A. gusty northerly wind was blowing which on the keen green spoilt many a good shot. Toward the end of the afternoon-it became rather cold and variable, for both players and spectators, so robbing the occasion of some of the pleasure that should attach to a championship final.

Wellington v. Thorndon. The first game to be decided yesterday was the'fourth round one between the representatives of the Thorndon and Wellington Clubs. This resulted in a win for T rndon after play of medium interest, the winners being fully entitled to their success. The eseores were: — Wellington—Marshall, Longmore, Warwick, Dimock (s.),_ 13. Thorndon—Goodwin, Torrance. White. Naylor (s.), 23. Kelburn v. Karori. The’only other fourth round play was the last three heads in the postponed game between Kelburn and Karori, which produced such sterling bowls on Wednesday. The score the .Previous evening was Kelburn 14, Karori 12. O the nineteenth head Karori scored a single point, which left Kelburn with a one-point lead only, but scoring a three and a single in the two final heads gave Kelburn the game, 18 —lu. Kelburn v. Thorndon. The result of the final game was: Kelburn— Forgie, Marris, Lomas, Goodwin, Torrance, While, Naylor (s.), 21. . The scores just about represent the difference in the calibre of the two rinks. Naylor’s team was a good one, but Lowry’s was better. On the whole, the Kelburn four were the more reliable, mid Lowry himself played very high-class cowls. Thorndon was placed at a disadvantage right at the outset of the game

by Kelburn scoring two points in each of the first three heads. On the second head Goodwin and White drew into the jack, but Lowry killed the head with a fast drive. In the pluy-off, the Thorndon men again got two close shots, but Lomas got them away with a firm shot. In the third head Forgie and Marris drew close to the jack. White cleaned up the head with a fast one, leaving Kelburn still lying one shot. Lowry improved by drawing another. On tue next head (the fourth), Marris and White drew beautiful shots, which Lowry attempted to displace by driving, missing narrowly on each occasion. Thorndon got three out of it. This was nullified on the fifth head. Goodwin’s bowl was still lying the shot when the skips went down, but Lowry cut it clean out with his last bowl, and lay three shots. Kelburn 9,""Thorndon 3.

Goodwin drew a couple of beauties in the sixth head, but Marris got the jack away to the edge of the ditch, and drew the shot with his second bowl. Lomas threw up a couple of counters, and it looked like a bagful for Kelburn, when White, with his last, drew dead to the kitty and Naylor also got in a counter. Not to be defeated Lowry carried the kitty into the ditch and lay three shots. A most interesting head this. Thorndon was now playing well, and led by Goodwin, got three shots on the seventh, and two on the eighth (after a “twin” by the aggressive Lowry, who is always game for a drive). Kelburn 12, Thorndon 8. Kelburn responded by securing two shots, drawn by Marris and Lomas, on the next head. When Naylor had only one bowl to play Kelburn was lying four, but the Thorndon skip clipped two of them out with a fast one. On the next three heads in succession Thorndon scored ’ singles, making the score 14—11 in favour of Kelburn. On the thirteenth head Marris got in a good shot that was never displaced, and on the rather wide fourteenth head, Naylor, by getting into it with a strong one, scored a couple of points. The fifteenth head saw Marris draw the jack away from good shots> by Goodwin and Torrance. He lay the shot (a toucher in the ditch) and Lomas drew two more. Naylor was unable to alter the position. Kelburn 18, Thorndon 13. Torrance drew a good shot on the sixteenth head. To protect the position Naylor put in a “Paisley” which got fairly into Lowry’s eye when attempting to draw round it. One to Thorndon. The seventeenth head was a sensation. Thorndon all ran well to leeward and when the skips went down Kelburn was lying two with a Thorndon bowl the third shot. With that out Lowry saw the chance of a bag. With his last bowl he came up strong, got a tiny graze off one of his own bowls, hit the enemy bowl fair in the eye, ana lay seven shots. 25—14. This was really the end of the struggle. Lowry contented himself by mixing the bowls well, and playing more for position than the jack, whilst Thorndon scored three points on the nineteenth and twentieth, and a single on the final head. This left Kelburn with a sixpoint win. At the conclusion of the game the president of the centre (Mr. H. Mayer) congratulated the winners on their meritorious win, calling attention to the fact that Kelburn had won two centre championships this season. It was known now, he snid, that to meet selected rinks from the Kelburn Club was to meet foemen worthy of one’s steel. At his call cheers were given for the winners, and also for the runners-up.

The following players will represent Thorndon in a friendly match against Khandallah to-morrow: —Home: Kain, F. W. Hart. Hutton. J. S.
