SPEECHES ON THE LEAGUE British Official Wireless. Rugby, January 1. General Smuts, who arrived in New York yesterday for a three weeks’ visit to Canada and the United States, proceeded at once to Ottawa to meet the Prime Minister, Mr. Mackenzie King. He is due to return to New York on Saturday, where, as a guest of the League of Nations Union, he will address a number of meetings in connection with the tenth birthday of the League. He will also address the Council of Foreign Relations, the Foreign Policy Association, the Carnegie Endowment, and the International Peace Association. General Jan Smuts, who is on his first visit to Canada, in the interest of the League of Nations, in a talk to newspaper men, said the basis of the League was the British Empire, and the Imperial Conferences held since the eighties were the foundations upon which the League was built.
