SECOND WIN TO SHIRLEY ; I . The second of a series of trials to select a Wellington representative for the Corn- ; well Cup contest was held at Petone on Saturday afternoon. In the first heat the following boats participated: Shirley (G. Cane and H. / Sturtcr), Wairuna (S. Woods and R. Parkin*), and Waitui (R. Julian and R. Kerr). . . , , The Shirley was first away, being followed by Wairuna. Wairuna had a lot of trouble iu setting her spinnaker owing to the squally weather, but finally hoisted it safely. Waitui gave up after several attempts, and sailed without it. About two-thirds of the way down the island the weather blew up to a threereef wind and was very squally. . Wairuna’s mainsail jibbed twice and the boom climbed the mast, making the boat unmanageable. The Puremata yachtsmen handled Wairuna in a masterly way and, manoeuvring her to a beam wind, finally got the spinnaker down. ! Waitu was wen back Shirley sailed a long leg to port to get the advantage of smooth water under the lee of the wharf and won comfortably by five minutes. The finishing times were:—Shirley, 4hr. 31min. 30sec; Wairuna, 4hr. 36mm. 30 sec • Waitui. 4hr. 39mm. Osec. G’ Cain has now two decisive wins to his credit, thus qualifying for the final.
