CARRIAGE DERAILED

MISHAP TO ADELAIDE EXPRESS SIXTEEN PASSENGERS INJURED (Rec. December 27, 7.25 p.m.) Melbourne, December 27. The Adelaide express met with an accident this morning near Callington. One passenger coach left the rails at a soft spot, and the mail van next to the engine was seriously damaged. Sixteen passengers were injured, but none seriously. Heavyrain apparently had caused the permanent way to sink under the weight of the train. ACCIDENT CAUSED BY WASH-OUT (Rec. December 27, 11.5 p.m.) Adelaide, December 27. The express was derailed fifteen miles on the Adelaide side of the Murray Bridge, owing to storm-water in a small creek washing out the tilling under the line, so that after the engine had crossed the s[K>t the rails subsided. One carriage was overturned and two others sent off the metals.

To-day’s express from Melbourne will be dispatched as usual, the passengers transferring at the break If the line is not restored by morning.
