FINED AND LICENSES SUSPENDED Two more intoxicated motorists were dealt with in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when fines were inflicted and the licenses cancelled for twelve months in ■■ each case by Messrs. Longmore and Staples, J.P.’s, who were on the Bench. The defendants were: George Inglis, a marine engineer, aged 37, and Alfred Geange Yorke Baxter, a linesman, aged 27. Inglis, who was found , intoxicated' in charge of his ear in Manners Street, was fined £lO, while Baxter, who was discovered in a similar condition on the Main South Road, Tawa Flat, was fined £2O. Concerning Inglis Senior-Sergeant Ward said that just before midnight on Thursday a constable on duty noticed the defendant in a car opposite the Royal Oak Hotel. The engine of the vehicle was stalling and racing, but eventually the car moved awny. The constable ran after it and found that Inglis was intoxicated and not in a fit state to drive. Accused told the police that he had consumed six whiskies. A sergeant at the police station was also of the opinion that accused was intoxicated. Mr. C. A. L. Treadwell, who represent- . ed Inglis, said that although his client had taken liquor he was capable of driving his car. As accused had not previously been before the Court counsel asked that he be dealt with leniently. Referring to the case of Baxter, SeniorSergeant Ward said that about 9.40 p.m. on Thursday Constable Tocker, of Johnsonville, received a complaint from a Mr. Topp that his car had been run into by another on the Main South Road, Tawa Flat. The constable visited the scene of the accident and found that Mr. Topp’s car had been pushed over a bank and had fallen about ten feet. Baxter was intoxicated and unfit to drive a car, and this 'opinion was also shared by a doctor at Johnsonville who saw defendant. Both cars were considerably damaged by the collision, but no one was injured.
