LEVIN NOTES

T “ A somewhat unusual discussion took place at the Levin branch of the Farmers’ Union recently. It was introduced by Mr. J. T. Kent, of Waikanae, who gave notice to move: “That the Government be asked to abolish the expenditure on Territorials and compulsory military service, and devote the expenditure to fiaekblock roads, rural telephones, and postal services,’ so as to encourage settlers to take up land and develop settlement." Many motions and amendments were proposed and seconded, but none of them found favour with the majority. The meeting assented to the conclusion of the chairman when lie said: “I take it that I am to oppose the motion as it stands, and that the meeting is still in favour of compulsion, but thinks that at present it starts when the boys are too young." The Rev. Bernard Hames, M.A , travelling secretary of the Methodist Young Jlejj’s Bible Class Union, visited Levin on Sunday morning, and met the Bible classes, and conducted the morning services nt the Century Hall, The annual meeting for the election of Methodist Church officers was held op Sunday night. Messrs. W, Watkins, W. H. Walker, J. T, Oak, I. T. Rawson. J. Djttmer, W, Bignel, E. Whyman, and J. Astridge, were re-elected society stewards; Mr. R.| Rrouse, Mr. 11. Walker, and Mr. 0. Andricksen were elected Sacramental stewards; and Mr. J. AV. Gibson, Mr. A. Tomlinson and Mr. 11. Holdaway were elected representatives of the congregation at. the quarterly meeting. A vote of sympathy to Mr. J. W. Gibson in his serious illness was passed.
