SEX EQUALITY

MR. H. F. JOHNSTON’S BELIEF Mr. H. F. Johnston, Reform candidate for the Hutt, is a firm believer in sex equality, according to the answers he gave to questions at his meeting at Petone last night. "Would the candidate if returned vote for legislation preventing married women working while their husbands are in employment?” asked one questioner. “I would oppose it tooth and nail,” replied the candidate, who added his belief that women had the right to their own independence, and that it would be subversive of British ideas for one sex to say to the other that there must be restriction on their activities and their desire to produce wealth. “I think it is monstrous that such a provision should be made,” he added amidst applause. Replying to an inquiry relative to the appointment of women police, Mr. Johnston said he thought Mr. Wilford had made a mistake in shutting the door against them. If the authorities could find avenues in which it was advisable to employ women police there was no. reason why these should not be appointed if they could do the work more suitably than the men.
