WANGANUI CITY COUNCIL

NEW RUBBISH DUMP Wanganui, November 26. The City Council met to-night, the Mayor (Mr. W. J. Rogers) presiding over a full attendance. Feeling reference was made by the Mayor to the death of the late Mr. A. D. Mackintosh. He said the deceased gentleman had taken a prominent part in public affairs and all sections ot the community regretted his passing. The Mayor welcomed the two new councillors, Councillors Adams and Pleasants, who suitably replied. A deputation headed by Messrs. Hooper, Russell and Brown waited on the Council complaining of the rubbish dump at the head of Purnell Street, which is within 150 yards of private residences and public roads and shops. Added to the offensive smell, smoke was now added and general unpleasantness as the rubbish had caught fire and smoke had laid like a pall for weeks, the deputation said. The Mayor said that the prayer of the deputation would be answered that night as negotiations were to be finalised at once with the Harbour Board to lease a porion of their land well away from houses. The Water Supply. Councillor Brown considered that the water supply should be closely watched. In reply the engineer (Mr. Deem) read his report on the pressure at Okehu dam, reminding the council that the leakage at the dam had been serious. “From now on by-laws regarding hosing are to be strictly enforced as the brigade found difficulty in fighting the ‘Donbank’ fire recently,” he said. “Pressure grouting of shell-rock country at the right wing of the Okehu dam is now well in hand. The main portion of tlie work that is accessible without de-watering the dam is now well under way and should he completed within the next few days. The whole work is progressing satisfactorily and I have every hope that a large measure of success’will be obtainable. It may be advisable to continue grouting operations along the upstream face of the dam- and its shell-rock abutments. This, however, remains to be seen and could not in .any case be undertaken until next winter when it would be possible to de-water the dam entirely, a condition which must be brough about before work on the upstream face could be proceeded with.”
