VIOLIN MUSIC

PUPILS OF MR. LESLIE C. WALKER An invitation recital was given by the violin pupils of Mr. Leslie U. Walker at the Concert Chamber last evening, and though the elements were most unruly there was a fair attendance. The performers, numbering over two dozen, included young people still in the primary stages as well as players well on the road to musical advancement. The performances'of all were creditable, as it its some ordeal for these young people to show their paces on a public platform, for the first time. Natural aptitude counts for a good deal in learning the violin. Outstanding in that direction was Master Billie Harris, who, in perfect tune, and exerting a firm musical tone, played an “Allegro” movement by Sonaille with marked facility. Another promising lad was Master Mark Hyman, who played a minuet by Handel. Master Jack Robins, who played an “Introduction and Polonaise.” by Bohm, is also the makings of a good violinist, and though Mr. M. Flaunty’s tone was not always so steady as it might have been, he gave indication of real feeling in a not very interesting “Andante Religioso” movement by Forster. One of the most difficult numbers on the programme was the de Beriot "Andante Tranquillo,” which was very well played by Master James McDonald. l This piece contains a high-pitched double-stop-ped cadence,,and that and the concluding harmonics were well played. Mr. Lionel Pyne, who played the well-known “Koi Nidrei” air. ami a Mlynarski "Mazurka." also played creditably. Miss L. Leckie and Mr. L. Harrington were heard in Purcell's "Golden Sonata,” and Mr. J. R. Diamond played a characteristic “Allegro Vivace” movement by Mozart. Other performers on the programme were Misses Joan Gross, and Lois'Smith and Masters A. Shaw, Lawrence Dunean fa" promising . lad), Desmond Walshe, and David O'Neil. The ensemble numbers, conducted by Mr. Walker, were I ho “Gnv-. of to iii B Flat” (Handel) and Lully’s ‘Minuet. ’ The accompanist was Mrs. Leslie Walker.
