SEA CAPTAIN RETIRES

HAZARDOUS DUTIES IN WAR-TIME (Rec. November 24, 5.5 p.m.) London, November 23. Captain V. W. Hickson, commander of the White Star liner Adriatic, who during the whole of the war time had a hazardous task while in command of ships transporting troops from Australia, has retired, having reached the age limit. Captain Vere W. Hickson, who was for a number of years in the LondonNew Zealand trade, has many friends in New Zealand. He has spent about 45 years at sea. He served his apprenticeship in “sail,” and after several years as second mate and mate in Liverpool sailing ships he joined the service of the White Star Line about 35 years ago. For several years he was chief officer,of the Athenic in the New Zealand trade under Captain C. H. Kempson. During the war he commanded the first Zealandic (now the Maniilins), the Medic and the lonic. About 1920 he transferred to the trans-Atlantic trade, in which he has successively commanded the Arabic, Celtic, Baltic, and Adriatic.
