BRITISH SAILORS’ SOCIETY

1 GRATITUDE EXPRESSED. A letter of appreciation has been _ received by the British Sailors’ Society from the men of the Royal Marine who recently left New Zealand. Following is a copy:— 28 Mess, H.M.S. Diomede. “Dear -Mr. Padman, —I’ am writing this on behalf of myself and the men of the Royal Marines who you so kindly made welcome to the hall of the British Sailors’ Society during our stay at various times in Wellington. It was a great pleasure for us to visit there and to meet such a lot of people who were, we feel sure, giving up the comforts of home to come and give their time in making life more pleasant for the men of the merchant service and we who follow the sea. We wish to extend our appreciation and heartiest thanks to you all for making our visits such pleasant ones, and I am sure (hat when we return to New Zealand wo shall all look forward to meeting you all again. It has been a pull to leave all our friends behind, and now we often get talking of our visits to the hall and what a fine lot of unselfish folk you all arc, and of what a lot of .friends we made at your institute. Anyway I suppose the best of times come to an end, but we can always look forward to having them again. . . . Thanking you nil for my chums and myself, hoping that we shall have the pleasure of coming ami meeting you all again.—(Sgd.) D. E. Price, Corporal. Royal Marines, 11.M.5. Diomede, late Dunedin.”
