COW SAVED BY AIRMAN
SICK ANIMAL SPOTTED’ FROM ALOFT Dominion Special Service. Auckland, November 22. Aeroplanes are frequently blamed for frightening cattle and other animals, but there are occasions when aircraft serve useful purposes. A I’apatoctoe dairy farmer, Mr. Orr, is one who is rather pleased that a De Havilland Moth aeroplane belonging to . the Auckland Aero Club Hew over his properly early yesterday mornim r . because the life of one oi his valuable cows was saved through the action of the pilot. About 5 o'clock yesterday morning Major Cowper was aloft with a pupil member of the club, when he noticed one of Mr, Orr's cows in distress in a paddock below. The pilot saw the cow stretched out on the ground >■ ar a dividing fence, and observed by the tracks the anima] had made in the long grass that it was ill. So he decided to descend., and alighted in a paddock alongside the cow. Major Cowper found the animal to be in agony, and walked to Mr. Orr's residence. Mr. Orr happened to be milking at the time, but he left his shed and accompanied the pilot to the paddock. Mr. Orr discovered that the animal had developed milk fever. It had calved only the night before. The cow, which was a magnificent beast, soon revived when proper remedies had been applied. Mr. Orr was profuse in his thanks to Major Cowper, and stated that he undoubtedly saved tbe life of the cow. which would have died bad it been left very much longer.
